My Stories

This page is dedicated to listing several of the strange or interesting things, dreams, non-realities that happened to me while in the hospital. After being in an induced coma for 10 days, and then another 15 days of un-assisted coma (due to brain damage), my brain went to some odd places. From time to time I'll return to this page to record those experiences, so check back often.

My First Cognitive Thought

After I woke up from the coma I had about a week of not fully cognitive time when I had the most altered experiences. The first thing I remember is waking up in the hospital with Allison and her sister Brenda by my bed. The only odd thing was that I was sure that we were in the Utah Valley hospital and it was about 25 years earlier. For some strange reason I was convinced that we were in the hospital to complete a pre-marriage doctor's visit. No matter that I couldn't talk and I was in a hospital bed, I was certain that that's where we were. The odd thing is that I was aware that I had time traveled to that time and place. I was so excited that first, in time traveling I had come to such a joyful time like getting married to Allison. And second, that I was completely aware of what had taken place in the last 25 years and I could relive that time and make better choices this time and help people through what was coming, like Allison's father having passed away just 4 months prior to my accident.

The only method that I had for communicating was using a board with letters, simple words and pointing with my finger. Allison and Brenda were laughing at how difficult it was to communicate (probably due to my poor spelling). I tried making hand jesters and facial expressions. It was only later, as I was more cognitive and we compared notes did we figure out that they had totally misunderstood what I was clearly communicating. All of my attention and focus was on my incredible thirst. They assumed things like kissing motions as affection (which was clearly sucking on a straw) and spelling ice as the need for removing the ice packs placed around me that had been put there to lower my temperature instead of the need for just that, ICE.

That time was filled with several dreams that had had some connection with reality. Next time I'll mention several of those like motor homes, the mob, cows on the celling, Colin causing a riot at Brengle Terrace park and more time traveling.

Time Travel: It's not just for Marty McFly
My time traveling dreams were not just limited to my life span. In one of my "memories" I woke up to find myself lying in a circa 1940 bungalow style hospital in some realm of colonial English South Africa. My thought was that I was left there alone to be taught by some English accented medical person to deal with my breathing and recuperate. It was only later that I learned that one of my respiratory therapist was an African American man named Alex from some African country with a great accent. He was prominent in several of my dreams. My bed was one of many empty beds in a large bungalow with windows open to the savanna. Which is a far cry from a single bed hospital room in the middle of Las Vegas.

My next stop was a remote cave in Israel around the time of Christ. I don't remember much from that visit other than the meaning of life was imparted to me then (I reveal that in a later posting and it's not just looking on the brighter side of life).

I also made a stop in an old Spanish mission Mexican city where I just met a young Latina girl named Maria. I learned from her what was so special about girls named Maria. Although my recollection was that she was stereotypical for the time and place, I understood that she was highly favored by God.

All of these moments were separated by bright flashes and instant cut-aways to the next seen. If you've seen Knight and Day you'll understand exactly what I mean. There's a series of linked scenes in the move while Cameron Dias is drugged when she comes in and out of consciousness from one precarious moment to the next. Those shots were separated by bright flashes of light in the movie. While watching the movie I turned to Allison and said "I know exactly how that feels".

Back to the future: I jumped again back to Utah Valley hospital where this time my sister Kim was now a doctor and treating me. In all of these "dreams" I understood that I was seriously injured but never questioned how or why I was in the hospital.

Let's go RV'ing

Once I woke up for my coma and began to become aware of my surroundings I understood that I was in the hospital and seriously hurt. It took several times of me asking and getting the answer before it truly sunk into my conscious mind. However, during that time, much of what was happening was sinking into my unconscious mind and was being interpreted in may different ways. I can only assume now what the discussions must have been that led to my next series of "memories" but they began to be heavily dominated by an RV, much like the one pictured above.

My first understanding was that, as I was recovering, there needed to be someplace for me to go, other than the hospital that I was currently in. And, getting out of there was alright with me because I really wanted to leave. I'll go into more detail about that later but, whether it's the brain damage I suffered, drugs I was taking, dreams I was having, coma I was waking up from or what, these recollection where very real to me, no matter how absurd they're going to sound now. And, I can remember almost all of them as if they happened yesterday, unlike dreams.

At that time, I was also becoming aware of the concern for the financial impact of what was happening, more subconsciously than consciously. Since I couldn't communicate with people, either because of my tracheotomy or my semiconscious state (or maybe just my bad spelling) my mind took over. It was apparent that with money becoming a major issue that something had to be done and to my horror my plasma TV was sold.

Other things were happening as well, we had to sell the house and also find a rehab facility. The natural fix for both was to get an RV. Apparently, just buying an RV wasn't a simple thing to do. We had to really investigate buying on and travelled around looking for one. Some how we ended up in Chicago looking at one dealer. The method we had used was similar to having a relater or agent find you house but, in doing so we had hooked up with a seedy crowd. Pretty soon we caught in a sting operation with the FBI.

As we looked at different RV's we settled on one that had a very special feature. It was operated almost entirely via the water distributed through the refrigerator. Most of my thoughts at this time were dominated by water but I save most of those for a later posting. Sufficient to say, this is the one that we chose. In buy it, we had to work with the FBI to try and take down the operation.

All of these thoughts, from my first recollection until full consciousness, were separated by bright flashes in my mind and strung together into one continuous memory and mix together with lucid memories of what was really going on in the hospital. However, I had a very hard time distinguishing reality from non at the time.

Following one of the bright flashes, we found ourselves sitting around a negotiating table with our agent, my parents and the seller of the RV. Unbeknownst to us at the time, the seller was also working with another law enforcement agency and was trying to catch someone else. Suddenly, the lights went out and there were lots of voices and confusion as they tried to sort out who were the bad guys and who was the law. In the end we ended up with our RV and caught the bad guys.

The main area of RV was the kitchen area with the refrigerator serving as the main control (through the water hose). There were other consuls as well with tracks allowing chair of the operator to freely move between the controls, much like the fish-faced admiral in the imperial star ship during the scene to destroy the Death Star in Star Wars IV.
